What you need to know about tax credits

What you need to know about tax credits

When you signed up for your Marketplace plan, you may have qualified for a tax credit.

If you got this credit, you can:

  • Use the credit when you file your federal tax return. This lowers your taxes.
  • Use the credit when you sign up for a plan. This lowers your monthly premium.

No matter how you choose to use the credit, you need to include it on your federal tax return.

Frequently asked questions

I’m ready to file my federal tax return. What forms do I need?

To report a tax credit or subsidy, you need these forms:

Form 1095-A (Health Insurance Marketplace® Statement)
This form shows how much your health plan costs and the tax credits you received. It’s mailed to you in February. Need a copy? Log in to your Healthcare.gov account.

Form 8962 (Premium Tax Credit)
The next step is to file Form 8962 with your tax return. To complete it, use the information from Form 1095-A. You can find Form 8962 and helpful information on the IRS website.

Keep in mind: This isn’t tax or legal advice. If you need help, contact your tax or legal professional.

What if my household or income changes?

Update your information right away! Keeping your application current helps make sure your tax credit is correct. For example, if your family grows, you could qualify for a higher tax credit. Or if your income goes up, you could qualify for a lower tax credit.

Examples of changes to report include:

  • You got a raise or lost a job
  • You got married or had a baby
  • You became eligible for Medicare or Medicaid
  • You had a change in disability or citizenship status
